If you care about the future of IT innovation in this region – specifically the state of technology education for young people within our communities – there’s still time to make a difference.
That’s because our high tech PR agency is proud to once again host the Run! Geek! Run! 8K race on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. this year at West Potomac Park in the District. Since 2008, thousands of runners have hit the streets to benefit the Equal Footing Foundation, the charitable arm of the Northern Virginia Technology Council dedicated to leveling the playing field when it comes to tech education and opportunities for young people here. Last year’s race raised $14,000 for the foundation. There’s still time to register, and you can do so here.
The foundation now funds and oversees seven computer clubhouses in Virginia, with the support of local governments, businesses and other non-profits. Without access to computers at home, students from ages 8 to 18 go to the centers to get hands-on experience with adult mentors and even take part in fun events such as Botball robotics competitions and NASA’s Space Flight Adventure Camp.
Last year, approximately 600 runners took part in Run! Geek! Run!, which was first launched by W2 Communications in 2008. Companies such as Deltek, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Transformation Systems have assembled their own teams in the recent past. It’s a great way for any organization – regardless of size, or whether or not it’s in the business of IT – to build team spirit while supporting a worthy cause.
There’s another major way to help: sponsorships. We heavily depend upon sponsors to make the event happen and appreciate these efforts. To contribute in any way, click here.
Otherwise, see you at the race! Pocket protectors, as always, are optional.
