“What Not to Wear”: The Corporate Video Edition

The moment has arrived: You’re participating in a corporate video interview. Your topic is set. Your talking points are ready to go. And then you realize…you have no idea what to wear.

We have you covered! To ensure you look your best in front of the camera, we’ve prepared the following five tips to help you avoid a clothing snafu and select outfits that are appropriate for the complexities of high-definition filming and make life easier for your fabulous filming crew:

Tip #1 – No Green

Do not wear green if you are filming in front of a green screen. You will, quite literally, fade into the background

Tip #2 – Don’t Blind the Viewer!

Avoid wearing shimmery or shiny jewelry that may reflect the lighting and distract from the message you are trying to convey

Tip #3 – Keep Patterns Simple (Or, Opt for a Solid!)

Abstain from wearing fabrics with tight patterns (small checkered, stripes, herringbone, houndstooth, etc.) that create an unstable, vibrating, jumpy effect called a “moiré pattern”

Tip #4 – Don’t Create Extra Noise

Skip the loud jewelry or clothing that will make a lot of noise in the microphones and overshadow your audio

Tip #5 – Pick a Complementing Color

Steer clear of clothing that clashes with your complexion. Clothing shades that are appealing to the eye are, in preferred order:

  • Blues
  • Maroons
  • Purples
  • Neutrals

My last tip is unrelated to your wardrobe: Don’t forget to have fun!

Although video can be nerve wracking, don’t forget to take a breath and trust the process. Your video crew will do everything they can to ensure you have a successful video shoot.
