Growing up in Northern Virginia, Ross Wilkers has always been surrounded by politics — sparking an early interest in journalism and setting the foundation for his career.
Today, as a Senior Staff Writer at Washington Technology, Ross combines his knowledge of the life around the Beltway and interest in the role that the government service industry plays in the local economy to fuel his reporting.
In this week’s episode of Inside the Media Minds, Ross shares his insights on what he is already predicting to be the defining story of the year — the partial government shutdown and its impact on individuals and businesses, both directly and indirectly. Ross also discusses a variety of topics, including:
- The importance of reporting on the federal government through the lens of those outside the Washington, D.C. beltway,
- The trends brought to mind prior to the partial shutdown, and
- His suggested best practices to keep in mind when pitching a reporter.
We also learn about Washington Technology’s own podcast called Project 38. The podcast, which began in 2018, is a collection of interviews with executives and lawmakers about what the public sector IT marketplace and professional services will look like in 2038.
