Digital Shadows

Digital Shadows

Case Study

Digital Shadows engaged the professionals at W2 Communications for guidance in differentiating themselves from the crowded market of threat intelligence. Our team strategically secured media coverage, generated responsibly provocative arguments in the media and provided business level proposition value on security threat intel to decision makers.

Customer

  • Detects early warnings of cyber risk to their organizations
  • Gives customers situational awareness to make their security products and people work faster because they’re armed

Challenge

  • Contracting W2 Communications in  2015, Digital Shadows needed to differentiate  from the threat intelligence industry (which was saturated with competitors providing “feeds” of security threats)
  • Getting the business value proposition across to the C-Suite in executive-level parlance

Journey

  • W2 Communications’ goal was to secure media coverage, contributed content and numerous op-ed pieces where the co-founders could lay out the business proposition
  • Inform several key audiences that as a community, we need to place a premium on a new type of security intelligence: Business driven risk intelligence

Solution

  • Strategically and surgically coordinated trade and business press coverage and arranged contributed content opportunities where Digital Shadows could unpack its story in front of key audiences
  • Program included a byline in Dark Reading – informing the readers to not toy with the dark web, but understand it

Implementation

  • W2 Communications leveraged the Hacking Team breach in 2015 to create a thought leadership piece strategically placed as a security feature in Passcode – The Christian Science Monitor
  • Dedicated time and research to define the issues and challenges  that businesses should be focusing on
  • W2 Communications worked closely with Digital Shadows to strategically create a research report on “hacker recruiting” to be released before the RSA Conference in 2016

Results

  • Digital Shadows “hacker recruiting” research, which focused around the unique take on how hackers address their IT shortage, set the company apart from perceived competitors and received a substantial amount of independent coverage and media, while also stirring up conversation and buzz at the 2016 RSA conference
  • Generated responsibly provocative arguments in the media, which then caused journalists to approach Digital Shadows for their business level knowledge on security and threat intelligence matters
  • Provided business level proposition value on security threat intel to decision makers (those in the C-Suite in executive-level parlance), differentiating themselves from their competitors in their crowded market
